Rated 4 out of 5 by from Better than SteriPen Used this on a 4 day backpacking trip in Yellowstone. It was much easier to use than the SteriPen I had been using. I don't think we got our full 80 cycles out of the battery charge though. We didn't run it dead, but it began displaying low battery around 40, especially after running 3 or 4 cycles in a row for the group. Other improvements I'd like to see: If you're going to include an extra lid, make it a pre-filter or at least a fancy, pop-up, clean, no-touch lid. Also, some way around having to wipe the threads after purifying would be nice.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Water is important - clean water essential Bought this unit for a hike along the west coast of Vancouver island - so glad I did. It purifies very quickly and even after several liters per day over 4 days it still had power. I did bring a powerback and USB cable just in case though. The benefit here is clear (haha) - you need to stop for water and pulling a filter out of your pack can be a hassle - so it gets skipped. Not a good idea. With this unit you can just pull the UV head out of a pocket, get the water, clean it and be done. At the water sources, this got a LOT of attention and I am sure that several folks ran to their local shop to get one for their next hike.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Bought to take to S America & elsewhere in the future Took the purifier, included .75L bottle, and 2 .6L chute bottles on a 9 day trip to S America. I easily become ill from any water change even in the US. Loved this so much, tummy had no issues at all. I would use several times each morning to fill the .6L bottles we carried each day and used what was left for brushing teeth. Didn't need to re-charge for the 9 day period. So very happy with this purchase and the 2 .6L chute bottles.

Rated 3 out of 5 by from Nicely designed unit but wish it was CR123! The unit design is about perfect. Easily screws onto any of the Chute or Eddy Camelbak bottles that I have. Very conveniend and effective UV sterilization and have used it on backpacking & mountaineering trips all over the Sierras. Never been sick. Just wish this was micro USB or even better, powered by CR123 lithium batteries! It would be perfect with batteries!

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Great and Universal! I have had the product for about a year now; only using it on a handful of trips. Works perfect every time I have needed it (IE I have not gotten sick). The battery would probably last a couple of days for one person, but I would generally charge it with my Biolite Camp Stove at night (my phone did not like the voltage from the camp stove, but this had no problems). I lost the bottle+travel cap at the gym a few weeks ago, and I have been annoyed over getting a new bottle for the cap. I figured they were unique.. Happy to say I was wrong! I was about to machine an adapter to put it to my Nalgene when I realized it already fit! They could have designed the cap so when I lost it I had to buy a new special bottle from them; or toss the $100 cap. I had no idea there was any sort of standard threading to these bottles, but I am so happy to know that now! If I lose my bottle during a trip, I can just plug the sterilizer onto any similar bottle!

Rated 4 out of 5 by from Reliable is Right Product arrived earlier than expected. Took the purification system to Canada on a 7 day back woods fishing trip and never went thirsty. Better yet I experienced no gastrointestinal issues while in Canada or upon my return here in the USA and I used it a lot for purifying my water.

Rated 5 out of 5 by from Suggestions for improvement I actually do not own this product, but I've studied the UV purification treatment options, and I believe that the CamelBak solution is closer to what we need than the other options. This review is more of a recommendation for the next line of products that I believe will be more helpful to hikers, runners, and backpackers. A problem with this device is that it does not purify water that gets on the threads. You have to remove the cap to drink the water, and in doing so, you could potentially be exposed to pathogens. By putting a sip valve into the cap, you would avoid this risk AND (very importantly) make the device ideal for ultra runners. Of course, in an ideal world, the cap threads would also be compatible with bicycle type water bottles: the same ones we are seeing come with ultra-running packs. The sip valve is extremely important when time is crucial. Here is why: If you're in a timed event, you can dip a large-mouthed bottle into a creek, put the cap back on, and press the button to purify. While it is purifying in your pocket, you can get going again. After it is done, no need to stop moving to open the bottle (so it doesn't splash all over you if you try to drink while running) - just sip from the valve. Other existing options for people on the move are: 1) Use a pen-like UV light. You have to stop and hunch over the bottle creek side waiting for purification to complete. 2) Use an in-line filter. So far, these require small apertures, which thus require soda-bottle like caps. These are slow to fill from a creek (especially the bags). Then, once they are filled, you still have the slow access to water as you have to use a lot of force to suck. I own this system, and I end up not drinking enough water. Doesn't purify like Camelbak. 3) Use a pump filter. These are heavy, and even more time consuming. Plus, they don't purify like the Camelbak does. Camelbak has a good thing going here, and I'd really like to see the next generation pare down the size of the cap (remove the clip handle), and insert a sip valve. The cap ought to be compatible with the standard bicycle bottle thread, and there should be an allowance made for "back pressure" (i.e. the negative pressure that occurs when you squeeze the water out of the bottle. Note that the pressure relief valve should NOT be integrated into the sip valve like some other products. This risks intermingling of the purified water with the dirty water.
